In today’s episode, I am going to look at the lessons we can learn from the financial literature classic, George S. Clayson’s, The Richest Man in Babylon. In 1926, George S. Clason published a series of pamphlets written in parables that was set in the ancient city of Babylon. The book became known as The Richest Man in Babylon and has become a classic in financial literature. This is one of the books that have had a profound impact on me personally and one of the foundational educational resources for anyone that wants to increase their financial IQ and build wealth.

I look at how we can limit and reduce the impact of unknown and uncontrollable variables. In exerting more control over our environment I start with discussing ourselves as individuals, our families, our friends, and communities and then look at the local, state and federal governments, taxes, inflation, banking and financial institutions, corporations, market risk, and much, much more.

I had a mentor of mine say to me that we are not alive on earth long enough to make all the mistakes that there is to make so it's good to speed up our development and growth by learning from the mistakes of others.

My guest in this episode is Chris Martenson. Chris Martenson is an economic researcher and futurist specializing in energy and resource depletion, and co-founder of PeakProsperity.com (along with Adam Taggart). As one of the early econobloggers who forecasted the housing market collapse and stock market correction, Chris rose to prominence with the launch of his seminal video seminar: The Crash Course (also published in book form, Wiley, March 2011). It's a popular and well-regarded distillation of the interconnected forces in the Economy, Energy and the Environment (the "Three Es" as Chris calls them) that are shaping the future, one that will be defined by increasing challenges to growth as we have known it. Of course, such warnings need solutions, which is why he and Taggart published the manual Prosper! How to Prepare for the Future and Create a World Worth Inheriting (RDA Press, November 2015). In today’s show we are going to look at why compound interest is so overhyped and if compounding interest is not the key to kingdom, what is? In the financial universe, compound interest has been sold as the Holy Grail by financial professionals. Letting your money compound over time has been the single most well-known piece of conventional wisdom in personal finance. I would agree that compounding has its advantages in the short term but there are financial challenges when you truly look into compounding in the long term. Your money earns more money, compounding over time, interest produces more interest and your money grows in an exponential manner. That is very powerful and I am on board with this and I love it when my money and wealth is compounding – it is fantastic, your money is working for you and if you read Rich Dad Poor Dad, you learned that you want your money working for you. So I am not saying that compounding interest is a bad thing – I am however going ask you to look at the disadvantages of it as well to fully understand this concept.

In today's episode, I discuss and share how I planned for 2017. The planning process included using a framework of health, relationships, business/career, wealth, and giving. I started the planning for 2017 by debriefing and reviewing 2016, what happened?, What were some of the wins and positives? What were some of the failures and negatives? I then make a list of things I am grateful for and also a corrective action list to proactively tackle some of the mistakes. After reflecting and debriefing the planning process start. I use the same framework of health, relationships, business/career, wealth and giving. I set goals in all of these areas and then break it down to manageable chunks. The big goals are broken down into quarterly goals, monthly goals, weekly goals and daily goals. I discuss the lesson I learned from Gary Keller's book, The One Thing, to identify the one thing I need to accomplish every day to achieve my weekly goals, and the one weekly thing I need to do to achieve my monthly goals, and the one thing I need to focus on monthly to achieve my quarterly goals, and the one thing I need to focus on quarterly to achieve my yearly goals.
